Healing from Within: Navigating a Major Illness as a Holistic Indigenous Practitioner
07/06/2023
Living with a cancer diagnosis is a profound journey that can test one's strength, resilience, and faith. As a Holistic Indigenous Practitioner, I have dedicated my life to promoting wellness using traditional and integrated healing methods passed down through generations. Much like my own Spiritual wellness journey before, this challenging personal experience has ultimately transformed me into an even better practitioner, a more engaged community member, and helped me attain a level of compassion as a human being that is deeper than I even imagined it could be.
From the moment of diagnosis, I have faced an intense onslaught of emotions and challenges. Fear and uncertainty gripped my heart, threatening to overshadow the wisdom I have gathered throughout my years of practice. Yet, as I embarked on my treatment journey, an unexpected realization dawned upon me - the challenges I faced with my own health were ultimately shaping me into an even more empathetic healer. Another layer of my gift structure has been revealed. This is one of the gifts that this imbalance…this DIS-Ease…has brought.
The first hurdle I encountered was acknowledging my vulnerability. As a healer, people look to me to always present myself as an epitome of strength and wellness. But cancer didn't discriminate, and although I educate on how “even healers need healers”, it has allowed the opportunity to remind me others that even healers can fall ill. This humbling experience has allowed me to strip away the illusion of invincibility, and in doing so, I have become a practitioner who can better connect with those I work with, on a even deeper level. By sharing my vulnerabilities, I created an even safer space for others to open up about their own fears and worries, foster more meaningful healing relationships.
The arduous path of cancer treatments has gifted me more gained perspective and a continued intimate understanding of pain and suffering. This deepened empathy has helped me recognize the subtle nuances of others' pain, allowing me to further tailor my approach to their unique needs. Consequently, the pathways to healing that emerged from my practice have become more inclusive and adaptable, encompassing not only ancient methods but also integrating elements of more modern modalities that resonate with those seeking comprehensive care.
Facing the physical and emotional toll of cancer treatment has not been without its hardships- as the surgeries, treatments, and healing ceremonies continue I am constantly being met with navigating the challenges. Enduring debilitating side effects, recovering from surgeries, and navigating the maze of medical appointments has demanded unwavering resilience and it is not soon to be over. This journey so far has taught me another level of the importance of self-care and the significance of maintaining a delicate balance between giving to others and prioritizing my own well-being. By embracing this wisdom, I have become a practitioner who is able to exemplify the necessity of self-care to those I work with, encouraging them to find a sense of equilibrium in their own lives.
My experience with cancer has galvanized my commitment to community engagement. Recognizing the unique healthcare challenges faced by BIPOC women specifically, and in Holistically & Spiritually rooted communities, has driven me to advocate for better resources and support systems.
The Transformative Power of Illness: Strengthening the Connection to Spirituality
Illness has a profound way of shaking the foundations of our existence, forcing us to confront our mortality and reevaluate the meaning of life. In the face of a diagnosis of a major illness/ DIS-Ease, which carries immense physical and emotional challenges, individuals often explore their spirituality as a means of finding solace, strength, and a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness of all things.
Spirituality, irrespective of religious or belief systems, can provide a powerful framework for grappling with life-altering circumstances. When faced with a life-threatening illness, many people yearn to connect with something greater than themselves. The diagnosis can ignite a desire to find meaning, purpose, and transcendence, ultimately leading to a deep exploration of the spiritual realm.
One of the ways in which a life altering diagnosis strengthens the connection to spirituality is by prompting individuals to examine the fundamental questions of existence. They may begin to seek answers to profound inquiries about life, death, and the cosmic order. Understanding the unity and interconnectedness of all beings becomes paramount as they navigate the uncertainty and challenges of illness.
Moreover, a diagnosis often propels individuals into a state of heightened awareness and mindfulness. Suddenly, time becomes precious, and every moment takes on a new significance. This newfound perspective can inspire individuals to embrace their spirituality as a means of finding healing, comfort, and a sense of peace amidst the storm. They may turn to practices such as meditation, prayer, or contemplation, which can foster a deep sense of connection to themselves, others, and the Universe.
Additionally, illness has the potential to shatter the illusion of control that many of us hold onto. It can aid in allowing us to be present in the moment. As individuals face the unpredictable nature of their illness and the limitations it places upon their lives, they begin to recognize the importance of surrender and acceptance. This surrender often paves the way for a spiritual awakening, as they acknowledge their interconnectedness with the wider web of life and let go of the need to exert control over every aspect of their existence.
Spirituality and spiritual practice can provide a framework for finding purpose and hope in the face of adversity. By aligning with a Divine power or seeking solace in interconnectedness, individuals can derive strength from the belief that their journey, however difficult, serves a purpose in the greater tapestry of existence. Spirituality can help individuals transcend the suffering and uncertainty of illness, allowing them to find courage, resilience, and a renewed zest for life.
How has your connectedness to a Spiritual practice helped you navigate hardships? How has a disconnectedness contributed to your process? Food for thought…..and action…..
